Rollers return to Koeberg CC

The West Coast Rollers on Sunday made an emotional return to the place where it all started – the Koeberg Cricket Club.

With the pre-season tour to Hopefield less than two weeks away, we felt the need to get some much-needed practice in, but available nets were few and far between.

A call was made to try Koeberg CC, having been there a year or so ago and knowing the net strip was still quite good.

But what we found was a sad, sad site – the field where most of us played League cricket so many years ago covered in knee-high grass, the tennis courts and skatepark in ruins and the clubhouse where a few of the Rollers had their first-ever beers looking shitty to say the least.

However, we were there on a mission and, armed with the unusual cricket apparatus of a weed-eater and broom, we set about clearing out a run-up and sweeping the thorns off the net.

And, as it turned out, it was quite a good session. A great turn-up saw the two Cooper brothers, Captain Haas, Andrew, George and Cornell turn their arms over. Also making a début appearance was Tim Sant, our new English import who impressed with his leggies, batting and chirps. He looks to be a good addition to the squad.

So, insane heat notwithstanding, it was a good workout – made so much better with a time at Melkbos beach afterwards.

Now if anyone with some clout in the local community can please have a chat to the suits and get someone to do something about that field …

About West Coast Rollers

Founded in the early-90s, the West Coast Rollers is a social cricket side that has become so much more than that - we are a brotherhood that just happen to be quite good at cricket and even better at drinking.
